Hot Building Product Stocks To Buy Right Now

For an industry that supposed to have been decimated by behemoths such as Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE:WMT) and Target (NYSE:TGT), the nation grocery chains have been holding up much better than those companies that were supposed to eat their lunch.

Shares of Supervalu (NYSE:SVU), owner of Shop `N Save, Save-a-lot and Farm Fresh, have surged more than 230% since the start of the year, as the Eden Prairie, Minn., company benefited from cost-cutting. Stil, expectations for the chain remain low heading into Thursday's earnings report. Revenue is expected to fall more than 51% to $3.88 billion. Earnings per share is expected to drop to 9 cents per share. One reason for the decline is that Supervalu is much smaller than it used to be having unloaded its Acme, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's and Star Markets chains earlier this year.

Kroger (NYSE:KR), the largest supermarket operator, recently reported solid earnings thanks to the growth in its private label brands. Shares of the operator of its namesake stores along with Ralph and Fry have jumped more than 58% this year. Safeway (NYSE:SWY), which Barron recently noted was nce a stock market pariah, has roared back this year, gaining more than 83% this year.

Joshua Lott/Getty Images NEW YORK -- Several major U.S. retailers posted disappointing sales for November after cautious shoppers pinched their pennies at the start of a shorter holiday season. Some of the companies that reported sales gains ramped up bargains to bring in shoppers who appeared hesitant to splurge. Costco Wholesale (COST) said Thursday that sales at stores open at least a year rose 2 percent, below the 3.3 percent increase analysts were looking for, according to Thomson Reuters. The warehouse club chain said consumer electronics sales fell. Same-store sales at L Brands (LTD), owner of the Victoria's Secret lingerie chain, also came in below expectations. Its drop of 5.5 percent was far deeper than the 1.1 percent decline analysts were projecting. Wall Street analysts are expecting 11 top retailers to report a 2.7 percent increase in same-store sales for November, according to Thomson Reuters. Excluding drugstore operators, which get two-thirds of revenue from prescriptions, that gain is estimated at 2.3 percent. Gap (GPS) will report its November sales after U.S. markets close. Retailers have been contending with low consumer confidence and the need to prod shoppers with bargains this holiday season, which has six fewer days because of a late Thanksgiving. The National Retail Federation on Sunday said U.S. shoppers had spent 2.9 percent less this year over the Thanksgiving weekend, the kickoff to the holiday season. The Conference Board, an industry group, said last week that U.S. consumer confidence fell in November after a sharp drop in October as Americans worried about their future jobs and earnings prospects. Earlier this week, J.C. Penney (JCP) reported a 10.1 percent comparable sales increase, partially reversing a disastrous decline in 2012, but the department store chain had to resort to aggressive bargains. The "environment will remain as competitive" through the holiday season, Chief Executive Officer Myron Ullman said. I

Hologic Inc.(HOLX) swung to a fiscal first-quarter loss as revenue weakened, driven by declines in its diagnostics segment, although adjusted earnings and revenue beat expectations.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Hologic (HOLX) have plunged today after the maker of medical devices for women reported results that left investors searching for a diagnosis.

The Associated Press has the details:

Hologic said late Monday that it expects lower sales of ThinPrep pap tests, NovaSure endometrial ablations systems, and blood screening tests. Hologic also said sales of its older 2-dimensional Selenia digital mammography system will decline as it begins selling its newer Dimensions systems. The company expects to report adjusted net income of $1.32 to $1.38 per share in its new fiscal year, which started Sept. 29. It forecast $2.43 billion to $2.48 billion in total revenue, down from $2.49 billion in fiscal 2013.

Analysts had predicted much higher net income of $1.63 per share and $2.59 billion in revenue, according to FactSet.

Citigroup’s Amit Bhalla summarizes the good and the bad:

While HOLX beat the Street by $0.02 on the bottom-line, revenues came in light and F2014 guidance was below Street expectations. 3D mammo remains a positive (+50% Y/Y) and GPRO was up +11%, but ThinPrep (-13% Y/Y) and NovaSure weakness remain a headwind. Initial F14 guidance includes revs down -1-3% (Street expected +3%) and during this “transition” year, HOLX expects to complete more asset reviews/sales, further streamline the business, and begin a new $250M share buyback. While we believe these efforts are a positive, a $1.1B write-down on diagnostics (GPRO & ThirdWave) indicates that some businesses may need more time to recover we remain Neutral-rated.

Canaccord Genuity’s Jason Mills and team are not pleased. They write:

HOLX commentary at fall brokerage meetings portended a flattish outlook for FY14, but actual 4 guidance on the Q4 call painted an even worse picture of current fundamentals, in our view. While we recognize management is likely attempting to mitigate quarterly misses and suggested FY15 sh

The big news for Madison Square Garden has been the success of its key sports franchises. The New York Knicks basketball team made the playoffs and earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Even more importantly, the long-delayed National Hockey League season finally got going in January, helping resurrect what many had feared would be a lost season, sending shares of MSG, as well as Canadian venue/team-owners Rogers Communications (NYSE: RCI  ) and BCE (NYSE: BCE  ) , higher. As it turned out, MSG's New York Rangers made the playoffs and will go up against the Washington Capitals in the first round. Playoffs are an especially lucrative time for sports viewership, and usually translate into extra profits for the company's broadcast businesses.

McCormick (MKC) was the clearest buy that I ran across this quarter. I own this stock in my actual portfolio as well as in The Seeking Alpha Experiment. MKC's stock price fell drastically after is 4th quarter earnings release. However, when looking at the numbers I realized that the company set records for revenue, net income, and EPS. These numbers did not meet analyst expectations which is why the stock fell. MKC does support a rather high P/E of 23x and some of this selloff was likely related to profit taking. However, when looking at the long term growth of the company's share price, its prominence within the spice trade, and the fact that MKC (especially in the post dip $60 price range) seemed to be a perfect acquisition candidate, it's lofty P/E did not dissuade me. MKC has given shareholders an annual return of 13% over the past 10 years. McCormick also pays a healthy dividend (1.86% at quarter's end) which it has increased for 27 consecutive years. The company's most recent dividend increase was 10%. MKC's current payout ratio is 42%. This number seems reasonable after MKC's record earnings year. I have no immediate plans for my position in MKC. I believe this stock to be of core holding quality and plan on adding to this position on any significant dips.

Toby Talbot/AP NEW YORK -- A voluntary effort by the world's largest food and beverage companies to remove billions of calories from the products they sell in the United States to help combat the nation's obesity epidemic has far exceeded its five-year goal, according to an independent evaluation released Thursday. In May 2010, 16 of the nation's biggest food and beverage companies, from Coca-Cola (KO) to Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), pledged to remove 1 trillion calories from the U.S. marketplace by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015, compared with a 2007 baseline. In fact, as of 2012 they sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories, found an analysis by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Reports like this, and the fact that they exceeded their commitment by fourfold, really shows that you can make progress in giving American families more healthy options," said Larry Soler, president of the Partnership for a Healthier America, a non-profit chaired by first lady Michelle Obama. The group was formed in 2010 to work with the private sector on anti-obesity strategies. At the time, critics said the Partnership relied too heavily on the good will of the industry and couldn't replace the role of tighter regulation on how food is manufactured and marketed. Such voluntary efforts by industry "are not a magic bullet," said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's Health, a non-profit policy group. "Particularly with kids, there is a role for regulation" in reducing demand for unhealthy, high-calorie fare. It isn't clear yet how the companies accomplished the dramatic calorie reduction, said UNC public health researcher Barry Popkin, who led the analysis funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest public health philanthropy. Some of the decline may have come from the recession, as financially strapped families cut back on junk food. When the pledge was announced, companies said they would substitute lower-calorie pro

Specifically, Arena Pharmaceuticals announced an expanded agreement providing Eisai with exclusive commercialization rights for all countries worldwide (except for South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Israel and New Zealand) for BELVIQ where Arena will receive an upfront payment of $60 million and is eligible to receive up to a total of $176.5 million in regulatory and development milestone payments - an increase of $123 million from the amount remaining available under the previous agreement. One under-$10 health care player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is EnteroMedics (ETRM), which is engaged in design and development of devices that use neuroblocking technology to treat obesity, its associated co-morbidities and other gastrointestinal disorders. This stock has been hit hard by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 59%.

If you take a look at the chart for EnteroMedics, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern $1 to $1.01 a share. Following that bottom, shares of ETRM have started to rip higher and trend back above its 50-day moving average at $1.08 a share with strong upside volume flows. This move is quickly pushing ETRM within range of triggering a big near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ETRM if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistances levels at $1.14 to $1.19 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 584,986 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ETRM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.37 to $1.47 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ETRM a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from February that started above $3 a share.

Traders can look to buy ETRM off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $1.08 a share, or below more key near-term support at $1 a share. One can also buy ETRM off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
